Professionalism on Social Media in Five Weeks

During my five weeks in Mass 290 – Strategic Social Media, I learned about Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, blogging and email. I learned how to use these networks and tools in a professional manner as a way to promote myself, a business, and increase revenue.

I made a Twitter account and started tweeting. I was taught that the best way to learn a new network is to listen first. This is the best way to figure out the social rules, manners, and what to and what not to do or say. So I listened and absorbed what other people posted about and how they posted. I learned to provoke people to click on the links I post by asking a question or by telling people whats in it for  them, they are more likely to click on the link. I try to tweet at least once a day, but other people tweet more, like once an hour. Retweeting is when you repost a tweet from someone, this is a great way to make friends as well. Twitter is a great way to find articles and information that I would not have found without other people tweeting it.

I learned the professional uses of Facebook. I can now easily see which companies, organizations, and non-profits are utilizing its’ Facebook pages to its full potential. Though companies are on Facebook, the majority of users are people, people that just want to document and tell people about their everyday lives. Some people literally post about everything they do, where others use it as a way to keep updated on their friends’ lives. Companies that people have applied for jobs at will do a Facebook check. If it sees any inappropriate pictures, posts, or comments, that company will look at it as flaws in a persons judgement.

LinkedIn is another social network I leaned about. The thing that sets LinkedIn apart from the rest is that it is specifically for professional use. People post job opportunities while others use it to find jobs. It also allows you to keep a current resume online, along with skills and where you are currently working. You make “connections” with friends, coworkers and anyone else that could help you land a job.

I also learned about blogging and started one of my own. A blog can be about any subject that you choose. I am going into public relations, so I have been writing about social media, public relations and marketing, so that I can show a company my blog during an interview to show that I know what I am doing online. Along with writing a blog, you can track the statistics of your blog and blog posts. How many unique visitors, how many visits, how many page visits, how many bounces. A unique visitor is one computer that clicked into the site. One visit is when a person clicks on the page, that is visit one, if they come back to the website later (after 30 minutes), that counts as a second visit. A page view is when someone visits more than one page within the same site. A bounce is a when someone clicks onto the site and right back off. If your a blogger or in-charge of a company website or social media site, you and your boss do NOT want to see a high bounce rate. A high page view rate and visit rate is what you want to see. One way to help your site get a higher visit rate is using keywords. Keywords are words that you include in the content of the site that Google and other search engines use to rank sites in searches.

Email is another social media network that most people do not think about as social media. People can use email as a way to stay connected with other people and companies can use email to stay connected with their customers. People delete an email within a second and a half after reading who its from and the subject. If they do decide to open the email, the average person will give the content five seconds before deleting. There are certain words that will cue a reader to think it’s junk, like FREE, Cash bonus or No Strings Attached. Emails with those words and words like that will be deleted instantly.

The most important thing I learned in the last five weeks was that no matter how many keywords, tags, or page visits your site gets, the most important thing is content and engagement. As content producers, writers and pr professionals need good content to have a successful campaign, website, and social media presence. Without engagement, what makes people want to come back? Writers must engage their followers and readers to get people to talk to them about their posts or the company you represent.

How to Promote Your Business Through Facebook

A company’s presence on Facebook can either be effective or useless. There are ways to ensure that your company’s Facebook page will generate more revenue, donations, traffic or whatever the goal your looking to achieve is.

The first thing to consider is your company’s profile picture. Was it designed by a graphic designer? Is the company logo in the picture? These are all things that need to be considered when starting a company Facebook page. This is the first thing people will look at when they search the company and when they click on that page. First impressions stick, this is why it is so important to have a professional, clear, image for a profile picture.

Communication is key, Engagement is required. A company on Facebook should sound human, not stiff and fake. To engage your audience in your brand, ask them questions, give them exclusive sneak peaks at new products, offer them special savings on product or services. When the audience does respond and talk, talk back to them. You want to promote two-way communication conversation.

Does your company have connections on their Facebook page with other social media outlets? Twitter, Pinterest, Flicker, LinkedIn? Having a link on Facebook to the other social networks your company is on makes it easy for people to follow you on multiple channels. is a good example of a company that is utilizing Facebook to promote their brand. It is an online supplement business and Even though they are an online only company, they still use Facebook and other social sites to promote their products and company. Their profile picture is of their logo and slogan.

In their profile pictures album, we can see that they also used to have special offers as a profile and other inspirational pictures to influence you to buy workout supplements through them.

Other pictures they have been tagged in or posted in other albums show body building competitions they have sponsored or been at. They also have an album of pictures people posted of where they put a sticker, which included a fish tank,  a computer, a candy machine, and a car, just to name a few. This shows that their audience is interacting with them, which is the point of social media.

To engage their audience in their brand, they frequently ask people questions, like “What kept you from the gym today?” or “Gotta love the smell of BBQ season! What is your very grill item?” Questions get people talking. 2417 people told them why they could not go to the gym that day, and 347 people told them what they were grilling.

They also have special offers for buying supplements through facebook, including an order button right on the Facebook page. That makes it even easier for customers to buy the product, instead of making them go find it themselves on Making it as easy as possible for people to purchase your product or donate to your organization is the best way to increase revenue.

Another way they engage people is posting about events that they are involved in, recipes for low carbohydrate meals, information about body builders sponsored by them and also about the products they have, new and old. Even by posting about products that have been out for a while, it refreshes peoples memories that its available on their webpage. also shares their other social media connections on their Facebook page. They have a twitter account which you can find the information you need to follow them and it shows their tweets. They also have a account. Without even going to, you can see all of their boards and pins. When you click on the pin through Facebook, it will take you to that pin on, then when you click on the pin in pinterest it brings you to that part of the website, nutrition for example, which means that they are also utilizing to promote sales and their brand.

Not only do they connect with other social sites, they connect their followers with their available jobs. By clicking on the Job picture/link, it shows you what the title of the jobs available are and where the job is located, most being in Idaho. There was however a job posting for a EU Marketing Manager in London and a Linux System Engineer in Costa Rica.

How to increase your Google ranking, tips to get your site to the top of Google

This week in Mass 290, we talked about search engine optimization.  Search engine optimization is when a writer uses keywords and phrases to make their work appear higher on a Google search. By using keywords, their work will appear closer to the top of the search results page versus on being on the 4Th page of results.

Google even has a special tab, called Google AdWords, to help writers and advertisers find what keywords will give them the most hits and the most competition. At first, I thought you would want to use the keywords that have the highest number of searches, but that also comes with the most competition.

Having a high or even medium competition rate for the keywords you use is NOT a good way to get your webpage more hits. Using the same keywords that 40,500 other web-pages are also using will not help your webpage be found by searchers, it will just get lost in the shuffle.

The way to be found online is to target a niche group. A niche group is a group of people interested in a very specific item or topic. An example would be a group about show-quality Bengal kittens, instead of just kittens.

Keywords are not the only thing that will move a site to the top in a Google ranking. Google also factors into account what sites your site is linked to, and what sites link back to yours. Linking to well-known trusted websites and blogs is a great way to get a higher rank, and if you can get a trusted site to link to you, your site will move even higher up the totem pole.

Relevancy and timeliness are also important. Having relevant, up-to-date information is also considered in a Google ranking. Being the first to break news will shoot your site to the top of a Google search.

Overall, the most important thing to help a websites visibility on a Google search is to have good content. Even with the most relevant keywords and the best niche group targeted, it will not help if the content is bad. When it comes down to it, people will not read an article or blog post that is written bad or has irrelevant information to their search, and Google will find those sites and bury them.

Manners on Twitter, Not Just the Dinner Table

Already within the first week of MASS 290, I have learned how influential social media is on the consumer market. Web 2.0 changed the game. In web 1.0 the consumer was talked to, where now, with web 2.0, its a 2 way street. The general public is able to give feedback to corporations via blogs, twitter, facebook, and other social media sites.

I learned about twitter and created my own account. I had no idea that there were twitter manners, like saying “thanks for the follow” when someone starts following you, or “Thanks for the RT,” when someone retweets something you posted. Considering that twitter is used by people and companies in a professional manner, it makes sence that people are more polite than they would be on facebook.

I have found though, that some people do not use twitter in a proffesional manner. I think that is also fine, as long as they were not following or being followed by proffesionals in thier career field.

I also found it interesting to know who has the most followers. I find it kind of sad that Lady Gaga has more followers than the New York Times, The Associated Press, and Fox News combined. Since celebrities and news stations have so many followers, statements and events can go viral within a few hours, as we learned with Amazonfail, Motrin Moms, and Rashard Mendenhall. All it takes is one slip up to start a disaster for your publisist or public relations department. At least they are there to pick up the pieces though.

Twitter and the format of web 2.0 allow people to tell companies and other consumers what they like, what they dont like, what they would like to see, and what they dont appreciate. Corporations can then take this into consideration when creating and launching new products.
